Bible Rock


Bible Rock or the Bathelegala mountain is located near Aranayaka in Kegalle district, Sabaragamuwa province. The picturesque panoramic view of this beautiful mountain attracts the local and foreign tourists very much. This mountain is famous due to its prominent flat top surface and it resembles the famous Sigiriya fortress. Englishmen named this mountain the 'Bible Rock' as its surface seems like a bible/ book.


The giant Bible rock among the other rocks brings fame and pride to Senkadagala region. When you are on the way to Kandy passing Kadugannawa, you may have a strong desire to hike to the top of the Bible rock.


The normal way to reach the foot of the mobile rock is the branch road B278 from Mawanella. After ten kilometers, this minor road turns right at the junction in Hathgampela is a board showing the small road to the Bathalegala mountain. 

The first kilometer of the path to the mountain top is now paved and it helps easy mountaineering. The hike itself will take less than a day to get to the summit. 

The home gardens consist of arecanut, pepper, banana, nutmeg, jam etc on either sides of the path that conveys the knowledge of agriculture of villagers in Sri Lanka. 

When you walk to the deep forest you will experience the amazing views of the lush green nature, steams etc. The journey to the Bible rock will be enjoyable not only because of the panoramic views but also due to chirping of birds.  Each step you place towards the Bible rock will be refreshed by the soft breeze. 

Bible rock has become one of the favourite hiking spots. It's an adventurous journey for hikers, nature lovers and bird watchers. Once you hike on the top of the mountain you will experience true relaxation and it will calm down your body, mind and spirit.
