Breadfruit Season On The Way.
Breadfruit is a common food prepared in Sri Lankan kitchens during these days as this is the beginning of the breadfruit season. Though breadfruit is not an endemic tree of Sri Lanka it is a very popular among Sri Lankans.
It is believed that breadfruit was introduced to Sri Lanka from Holland by Dutch and themother plant of country palm tree which was introduced to Sri Lanka is near the Harbour Holiday Resort in Galle Fort.
There is a nice story behind the breadfruit tree. According to the villagers of Galle, breadfruit was introduced to Sri Lanka to undermine the strength of Sinhalese but it was not successful because We; Sri Lankans consumed breadfruit with coconut. It helped to cut off the strong power of the breadfruit and could not make any harmful effects to people.
However, breadfruit is rich in carbohydrates and it provides huge amount calories to the body. Though it consists of less amount of protein, fat and dietary fiber it contains high amount of vitamin C, vitamin B, potassium, magnesium etc.
Breadfruit is favourable for the patients suffering from arthritis, cancers, malaria, diarrhoea etc but consuming too much breadfruit can cause gastritis, urine infections etc.
However, breadfruit curry adds extra special to your lunch or dinner during this season. Eating boiled pieces of breadfruit with scraped coconut is a good appetizer for breakfast.
