Poson Festival in Sri Lanka - 2019

June is a special month for Buddhists of Sri Lanka. In Sinhala, the month of June is called  the month of Poson. This month is called 'Poson' in Sinhalese because Sri Lanka was blessed with Buddhism in this month. Being free from all the mythological practices, Sri Lankans overwhelmed Buddhism when Arahant Mihindu Maha Thero introduced Buddhism  to Sri Lanka on Poson full moon poya day. . Therefore Poson  festival is celebrated to commemorate this significant event.

Sri Lankan Buddhists celebrated Poson on 16th June this year in a grand scale. All over the country people got together for Poson celebrations. There were Poson zones in the most parts of the country specially in Anuradhapura. Sil campaigns, Meditation programmes, Dhamma sermons, Alms giving, singing devotional songs, Exhibiting pandols, Poson decors, food stalls that give food free of charge etc are conducted in these Poson zones.
