Bambarakanda Falls

Sri Lanka is an extremely beautiful country rich in natural resources. Waterfalls are a part of our natural environment that enhances the beauty of Sri Lanka. Bambarakanda, the highest waterfall of about 263m in its vertical height is also called Bambarakele Falls.

This is exactly located in Haputale electoral division and to visit there you must take Balangoda-Badulla route to reach Kalupahana junction. From there, you have to travel 6km along a rough track which many cars won't be able to manage. This slopy path is full of pits and the whole area is covered with a mountainous Kalupahana forest and the patch of pines. The major water course of Bambarakanda falls is Kuda Oya, the tributary of Walawe river.

According to villagers, this was firstly named as Dulkota falls and only due to the position of its location later it was named Bambarakanda falls. Weerakoongama is the village which is closer to Bambarakanda falls and according to the villagers, this village was named due to a poet Weerakoon Mudali who lived there. It is said that he was an expert to do magic spells and rituals.

Milla, Keena, Pihibiya, Dhamba etc are some of the trees that can be seen around the village. Udaweriya tea estate is located above the falls in the mountains. There is a small path that runs towards Horton Plains through Uduweriya.
