Kiri Muhuda /The Milky Sea

The city of Kandy has got more prominent place in SriLanka because it is the home of the Tooth Relic. The beauty of the city is enhanced by the Kandy lake/ Bogambara lake which is known Milky Sea/Kiri Muhuda during the past.

The lake got its name during the reign of the last king of Sri Lanka Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe. He was a nature lover as well as an animal lover. He took care of the beauty of the environment very much.

Once he was strolling outside the palace he saw a flapshell turtle or 'kiri ibba'. He thought to feed and arrange a suitable habitat to this turtle to stay. However the turtle lived there nearly a year. Meanwhile, the king had an idea of creating a lake that makes waves which is similar to the ocean around our island SriLanka. Actually his main purpose was to make the people of the hill country feel the beauty of the Indian Ocean that surrounds SriLanka.

So as ordered by the King, the royal men built a lake which was created near the habitat of the kiri ibba.

Then the king thought to give the lake a meaningful name. Finally, considering all the above facts he named the lake 'Kiri Muhuda'. Now it is called Senkadagala Wewa, Nuwara Wewa or Bogambara Wewa.
