Jathika Namal Uyana
Travelling to a place where you could see only green and green is one of the best experiences one could have. Recently, I visited such a mesmerizing destination. It is the largest Ironwood (Na) forest and Pink Quartz Mountain in Asia which is commonly known as the Jathika Namal Uyana located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka on the Colombo - Anuradhapura Highway at Galkiriyagama.
Na is the national tree of Srilanka. The vegetation of the forest is completely enriched in Ironwood trees as well as with many endemic plants. The forest spreads nearly 2000 square kilometres and it is a habitat of many indigenous species of animals.
The Ironwood timber is considered extremely hard and durable. At the same time, Ironwood is rich in medicinal value.
The natural water springs sprung up in this forest are such a marvellous natural resource. The cool water flows in the small streams wipes out the tiredness of pilgrims once they wash their faces.
The beautiful creepers has formed arches connecting to each other and provides the most coolest shade until you reach the Pink Quartz Mountain.
Once you reach the top of the mountain you could worship the Buddhist Shrine and can witness the amazing view of the surrounding. It is not easy to reach top due to the natural topographical landscape of the mountain and the Pink Quartz seems dull due to natural causes. Eventhough, it is said that the Pink Quartz has not destructed though its surface is dull in colour.
