The Coconut Cultivation in Sri Lanka

There are no other trees that Sri Lankans are bound with other than the coconut tree. The history of the coconut tree is as old the history of our nation. The written records provide us with how the coconut vegetation had spread out in Sri Lanka. 
  1. According to Mahawamsa, the historical book, King Agrabodhi of Anuradhapura kingdom had an orchard of coconut trees in Weligama, Southern province. 
  2. The venerable Chinese monk, Fahein too has mentioned in his historical records that Srilanka had fertile coconut vegetation in our country.
The ancient rural Srilankans grew coconut trees to fulfill their daily needs but with the invasion of Europeans, coconut became a commercial crop.

Coconut is mostly grown in Colombo, Kurunegala & Chillaw. The coastal area is the best place for the growth of coconut trees. Almost all the parts of the coconut tree are used for different purposes. Therefore coconut tree is considered a special tree in Sri Lanka.
